The debate was addressed by a number of peers, including former Foreign and Defence Secretaries, Lord Robertson, the former NATO Secretary General, and a former Chief of the Defence Staff.

The issues discussed included the prospects for the April Nuclear Security Summit in Washington and the May Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in New York; US-Russia negotiations on nuclear disarmament; the UK’s nuclear deterrent; and strengthening the international regime to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons, including addressing Iran and North Korea and managing the potential risks posed by the expected expansion of civil nuclear power.  The debate was concluded by Baroness Kinnock of Holyhead, Minister of State for the FCO.
